McClellan the Hope of the Nation

AIR: "Red, White and Blue" (aka "Columbia the Gem of the Ocean")

"Red, White and Blue" was one of the most patriotic songs of the antebellum period. The lyrics to this song represent the assurances of patriotism and nationhood, important themes of presidential politics in mid-19th Century. This song includes references to soldiers and George Washington; if Lincoln supporters claimed that the Democrats and "Copperheads" were unpatriotic, then this song is one of the best responses. It is recorded as if it were to be sung at a political gathering with individuals not familiar with every lyric.
